What to know when organizing your proposal at villa Monastero


Thinking to pop the question at Varenna's famous Villa Monastero? Obviously I'll be the first to encourage the idea, but fair warning, it will take you a bit of planning! Between villa permits, booking a photographer, and other logistics, organizing a proposal at any Lake Como villa can start to get overwhelming... unless you've got the right person helping you.

Villa Monastero Photography Permit Cost and reservation Process



Cost


An often overlooked detail to photoshoot planning on Lake Como is that, unfortunately, many of the nicer and more famous locations come with a price tag! If you're thinking to have a professional photoshoot at Villa Monastero (or any Lake Como Villa) you must ensure that you have booked your photography permit ahead of time. And remember, this is a permit does not include the photographer themself.


What you will pay for a photography permit depends on the particular villa. At Varenna's Villa Monastero, as of October 2026, you can expect to pay 300 EUR per hour.



Process


To reserve a photography permit for this Lake Como villa, you can go directly to their website to select a date and time slot. It is important to remember that you must reserve your spot at minimum 20 days before your planned session!

Best times of day for photos in Varenna


While not everybody considers it, the time of day we photograph your proposal will make a drastic difference on the outcome of your photos! Typically, what this means for you is shooting right around sunrise or sunset. For Varenna specifically, I recommend getting as close to sunset as you can, depending on photography slot availability at the villa.


If your schedule is tight and you need to schedule your session in the middle of the day, most photographers won't say no... but just understand that the work you see in their portfolio was heavily influenced by the time of day the photographs were shot. Sunset means soft, gentle lighting. It's super flattering for the mass majority of people. Bright mid day lighting on the other hand can mean harsh shadows and blown out background details. The harsh shadows can work, it's just tricker, and typically more flattering for people with more defined bone structure.

How much does it cost to hire a proposal photographer in lake como?


What you will pay for a photographer in Varenna, or anywhere on Lake Como, depends entirely on who you are speaking to. I did plenty of competitor analysis when coming up with pricing for my own sessions, but answers were typically hard to come by. It's been my experience that not just photographers, but the majority of service providers in Italy tend to keep their pricing on the down low.


I can only speak for myself, but one of my Lake Como engagement and proposal photograph sessions will cost you 450 EUR for the first hour + 250 EUR for each additional hour.

Is Villa Monastero a good place to propose?


Oh absolutely it is!


If you're looking for a proposal location that's dreamy, luxurious, and not too crowded, Villa Monastero is a stunning go-to. The gardens are charming, the views are breathtaking, and there is even a sweet little lakeside cafe. Not to mention, Villa Monastero is right on the edge of one of Lake Como's most famous towns: Varenna! The perfect part two for your photo session if you're after some cinematic, classically Italian shots (think colorful alleyways, boats, docks, and gelato!)
