5 reasons you should hire a fashion photographer for your ENGAGEMENT photos

In what seems an endless sea of photographers, selecting the perfect one for your most important photos can feel overwhelming. There is so much to consider — trustworthiness, price point, availability — and not least of all, aesthetic!

When most people imagine their engagement photos, they envision that classic style — smiles, hands holding, standard posing. Brightly lit, clean, and beautiful. It’s classic for a reason!  But if you’re here reading this, chances are you want something more.

You’re not looking for “nice.”

You’re looking for cinematic.

For story.

For images that feel like they belong in a magazine — not just on a holiday card.

If you want engagement photos that feel elevated, intentional, and undeniably cool, (and make all of your friends jaws fall to the floor!)

Meet Your Milan Photographer

Before my photography took off, my career was already totally fashion-centric.

I had studied fashion design in the United States at a four year university, worked in the Nashville Tennessee music industry in styling and makeup artistry, and then ultimately went on to launch my own accessories brand. It was ultimately my brand, and its need for strong visuals, that sent me down the path of photography.

These days I shoot more than just fashion, dabbling in everything from Lake Como proposal photography to Milan corporate event, but regardless of the subject matter, that fashion influence is ever-present.

I’m Sydney Duncan, a Milan-based photographer specializing in romantic couple sessions, fashion photography, and editorial-style branding photography across Italy. I work with international clients who value imagery that feels intentional, effortless, and emotionally grounded. My goal is to create photographs that don’t just document the moment — they hold it.

1. Fashion photographers tell stories

Fashion photography is storytelling at its core.

A fashion photographer doesn’t simply photograph what happens in front of them — they capture the feeling of it.   The anticipation before a proposal. The quiet confidence between two people walking side by side. The tension, the movement, the in between moments that say more than a perfectly posed smile ever could.

When you hire a fashion focused engagement photographer, your session becomes less about checking boxes and more about creating a visual narrative. One that feels artful, intentional, and authentically yours.

2.An Understanding Of Light and Shadow

Fashion photographers don’t simply take photos, they sculpt with light.

Whether it’s golden hour spilling across a Milan street, dramatic shadows cast behind the shine of a florescent sign at night, or soft natural light during a Lake Como boat proposal, light is used deliberately to enhance mood, shape, and emotion.

This approach creates engagement photos that feel dimensional, cinematic, and editorial. They are images that draw you in rather than just documenting a scene.

3. You Get to Be a model for the day

You don’t need modeling experience to look incredible in your engagement photos.

One of the biggest perks of working with a fashion photographer is gentle, confident direction. You’re guided in a way that feels natural, never stiff, never forced. Think guided candids, not rigid posing.

For one afternoon, you get to step into a version of yourselves that feels elevated, confident, and entirely real.

4. Fashion photographers know posing

Are you like most of us - not quite so sure what to do with your hands or which way you’re supposed to look? Fashion photographers are absolute pros when it comes to finding and highlighting your best angles. But just as importantly, they know when to step back and let moments unfold.

Between the poses, the laugh, the glance, the unscripted touch, is where the magic happens. And fashion photographers don't just catch it, they turn it into art.

5.Get Unconventional photos that stand out from the rest

You’re not a cookie cutter couple. Your engagement photos shouldn’t be either.

Hiring a fashion forward engagement or proposal photographer opens the door to creative locations, unexpected compositions, nighttime sessions, movement, texture, and mood.

Whether it’s a cinematic Milan engagement shoot, a Lake Como proposal on a private boat, or an intimate city session that feels pulled from a film still, these are images designed to stand apart.
