I’m Sydney Duncan, a Milan-based photographer specializing in romantic couple sessions, fashion photography, and editorial-style branding photography across Italy. I work with international clients who value imagery that feels intentional, effortless, and emotionally grounded. My goal is to create photographs that don’t just document the moment — they hold it.

Need help Planning a milan ENGAGEMENT photoshoot?

It's no secret that Italy is one of the most romantic countries on the planet! Couples of all makes and models travel from across the globe for that dream getaway with their love. While they're here, many don't miss the opportunity to take things the extra mile and capture keepsakes, an engagement photoshoot to remember for a lifetime!

I'd be lying though to say that, on top of booking plane tickets, hotels, and dinner reservations, that planning such an experience can't get slightly overwhelming! A photoshoot is a deeply personal experience, especially for such an important location, and organizing it in a foreign country where you don't speak the language is a feat.

However, I'm here to make it easy for you. Read along and discover the keys to planning your seamless dream Milan engagement photoshoot!

How to choose a Milan ENGAGEMENT Photographer

Selecting your photographer for such an important shoot is a deeply personal choice, but unless you have a lot of experience in front of the camera, it isn't always easy to know what green flags to look for... I've got two key tips that might seem obvious, but can often be overlooked!

First things first, choose a photographer who knows the area! Someone who can guide you to the best locations at the best times of day, and who can maybe even recommend a restaurant to two to hit up later that evening.

Secondly, be sure that their portfolio of work aligns with your unique vision for your engagement photos. For instance, if you want candid, natural light street shots, you won't go after a photographer whose specialty is posed studio sessions. Look through their instagram or website and be sure that their vibe resonates with you!

WHAT'S THE BEST LOCATION FOR your Milan ENGAGEMENT photos?

When it comes to finding the best location for your Milan engagement photoshoot, my advice is to stick to the basics!

As an avid traveler myself, I would typically steer away from the more traditional "tourist" spots, but in an instance such as this, I'd actually recommend the opposite. There's a reason you chose to do your engagement photoshoot in Milan, and you want it to look like Milan. You want to see the photos and be transported back in time to the romance you shared with your love in this stunning Italian city, and so keeping to the classics is just the trick!

So start in front of the Duomo, Milan's iconic cathedral... it's a crowd favorite for a reason! It's also a great starting point to then wander into the city's charming side streets, making your way through the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and towards the cobblestone alleyways of Brera.

How to pose for your engagement photos

A common question amongst my clients, people who wouldn't under ordinary circumstances proclaim themselves to be models, is how on earth is one meant to propose for engagement photos?!

The answer is that it varies from case to case, couple to couple! But any photographer worth their salt is going to be able to give you just enough guidance (and just enough comfort!) to help you feel confident that your photos will achieve that aesthetic you're going for.

In my case, I tend to give my clients as minimal posing guidance as is necessary. In my professional opinion, what makes for the best photos is when you and your love are being authentically yourselves! That sort of energy translates to gorgeous images that don't just capture a moment, but tell your story.

THINKING ABOUT A MILAN PROPOSAL PHOTOSHOOT?

Thinking of popping the big question pre-engagement session?

These days proposal photoshoots are all the rage, and there are few countries more romantic to get engaged in than Italy!

If you're thinking to surprise your love by getting down on one knee, what is a better time than when you've got a professional photographer there to capture the real time, authentic emotions of the moment? So my vote is yes, definitely propose with a camera in range, and then smash out those engagement photos just after with the endorphins still high!
