Meet Your Lake Como Proposal Photographer
I’m Sydney Duncan, a Milan-based photographer specializing in proposal photography, engagement shoots, fashion photography, and editorial-style branding photography across Italy. I work with international clients who value imagery that feels intentional, effortless, and artful. My photographs don’t just document the moment — they capture the feeling of it.
Today's emotions being captured? Zac + Hannah, on vacation in Italy from Australia. Unbeknownst to Hannah, Zac and I have been in cahoots for weeks, planning the perfect Lake Como proposal.
Candid Proposal Photos on Lake Como
Our soon to be groom reached out to me via email with plenty of time still left in front of him before the he planned to pop the big question.
He asked me if I could suggest any beautiful proposal locations on Lake Como, and I certainly had my fair share of suggestions. In the end we settled on one of my favorite spots, a romantic terrace overlooking the lake and mountains.
THe perfect Lake Como Proposal Spot
The proposal spot was perfect, made even more so by the season. Lake Como can get a bit hectic during the spring and summer, and while that shouldn't be a deterrent for your proposal (we can work around the obstacles no problem, I do it all the time) a Lake Como winter proposal certainly has its perks! Mainly more privacy.
The Details that make your story
When capturing a proposal, I can't resist the little details.
The ring, of course, that's crucial. But also those little micro moments that so intimately define a couple. The way they hold one another, the breath they take in sync between one kiss and the next.
From a candid proposal to lakeside engagement portraits
The transition between a candid proposal to engagement portraits is always a funny one. This massive life changing event has just taken place, emotions are high, and then you're thrown right into a photo shoot! Of course I give my couples as much time as they like to just be with each other in the moment. I step back, snap a stray candid or two, and let them soak it all up, but as soon as they're ready, the fun starts!
So often my clients come into their engagement portraits a bit nervous. They're unsure how to pose, what to do with their hands, and so on, but after relaxing into a few frames (and a quick peek at my camera to see how incredible they look) everything starts to flow. This was exactly the case with today's stunning couple, they totally nailed it!
A Lake Como Proposal Spot with Views
Make no mistake, the most important component of your engagement and proposal photos is always you, the lovestruck couple. You could be anywhere, in a parking lot, on the side of the interstate, doesn't matter. As long as you're together (and as long as we've got the right light!) that is enough to create photos that bring a love story to life.
This being said, Lake Como is certainly the cherry on top, and clients who want to propose at this, one of the world's most classic and romantic locations, are all about the views.
Sweeping landscapes, sparkling water, snowcapped mountains, and not to mention touches of classic Italian architecture.
Candid moments
Gorgeous authentic proposal photos are crucial, but let's not forget those quieter candid moments. The soft laughs. The shaky hands still holding each other. The way couples instinctively lean in closer once the initial adrenaline settles.
These in between moments, unforced, emotionally rich, and completely unique to you.
As a Lake Como proposal photographer, I always leave space for these natural interactions to unfold. No rushing, no interrupting, just gentle observation and intuitive timing.
It’s in these frames that the story deepens.

Now comes one of my favorite parts... the magazine worthy, editorial style engagement portraits.
This is where my fashion background really comes into play. I gently guide you through fashion editorial inspired posing. Nothing stiff and awkward, but totally elegant and absolutely flattering. I make sure that your best angles are out on display. Nothing forced. Nothing cheesy. Just elevated, intentional imagery that still feels like you.
If you're familiar with my work, you know that I love some subject layering. A good sprinkling of depth, texture, shape, and movement.
Untraditional Engagement Photos
Zac had shopped around a bit for a photographer, but said that ultimately it was my aesthetic that stood out to him. He knew Hannah's style well, and my own was something that he was confident would resonate with her.
The drama, the shadows, textures, and emotion. They didn't want traditional smile and pose engagement shots, they wanted shots that were editorial worthy.
I'll never not love a good cropped shot of two people in love.
